Finale Productivity v. 5.1 by Bill Duncan

npc Imaging - July 2007 (v. 5.0.1 January 2010, v 5.1 February 2010). ISBN 978-0-9706231-2-6 (ISBN10: 0-9706231-2-7)

Following the untimely death of highly-respected computer-based music engraver Bill Duncan in 2006, it seemed as if his incredible Finale Productivity toolset would no longer be available to the music community. However, we are proud to announce that we have been granted the rights by the trustees of Bill's estate to publish his work and are now making available version 5.0 of Finale Productivity in almost unmodified form, as Bill left it for posterity but now with some updates to the actual fonts. The package consists of a 182-page book and a hybrid Macintosh/Windows CD-ROM, which contains all the Fonts, Templates, Key Maps, Tips and other tools, plus a PDF copy of the book. We are glad to consider this publication the third in our series of music reference materials, which now includes Andrew Stiller's incredible Handbook of Instrumentation and The Art of Music Engraving and Processing by Ted Ross, both on CD-ROM. A special bundle package is available, including all three titles. See below for ordering information.

Finale Productivity v. 5.1 features include:

  • 22 New Music Fonts (OpenType and TrueType versions).
  • Templates in Finale 2003 and 2004 formats
  • Copy&pasteShortcuts.mus Finale file with predefined harp pedal spellings and Smart Line Styles

New Font List for Version 5.0.1

The 22 new music fonts include:

    VERTICAL ARTICULATION fonts:
Brackets and Rolls (arpeggios with and without arrows) - calibrated in steps from 1 to 20 (Brackets) and 1 to 40 (Rolls). With "Articulations" enabled in "Automatic Music Spacing", these will space automatically, avoiding collisions with barlines and other notes. And because they are articulations, they can be defined to position automatically to the note they are attached.

    CHORD fonts:
Allows for a much cleaner "look" as well as to enable the correct entry of vertically-aligned Altered Bass and Compound chords. Finale won't let you do that easily. Works with TGTools chord auto-align feature. Also, these fonts support several viable Chord styles.

    TEXT fonts:
Drop-shadow enclosed text for Rehearsal markings. Plain enclosed text for situations where individual enclosures are not available. Serif and sans-serif lyrics fonts also included.

    MUSIC CHARACTER fonts:
Special harp notation. Tempo markings and transitions that allow complete tempo expressions to be entered as a single text string, including tuplet brackets and transitions with arrows.

HAIRPINS font - many short hairpin expression combinations as single characters.

User comment, as posted in the Coda Finale/Macintosh forum...

"Unsolicited testimonial: I've used Bill's fonts for about 6 months and they're all excellent. The Chord font addresses the problem you're trying to solve, but maybe better than that is the Chord suffix library that's part of the package. Over a hundred suffixes predefined, some very complex. I've had to create exactly one, and that was just a matter of duplicating/modifying an existing suffix. Other fonts are problem specific: harp notation, brackets, "rolls" (arpeggio squiggles), time signatures, metronome marks, shaded rehearsal boxes, unshaded boxes, lyrics. All wonderful. (The harp font, "Salzedo" is a tour-de-force. Bill reproduces a few pages of one of Salzedo's books, chock full of specialized notation and instructions, mostly with this font and text blocks. The instructions of how to master text blocks to the extent that one can use Finale for extensive musical textbooks is worth the price of the font alone. Must be seen to be believed!) You owe yourselves an early Christmas present: buy yourself (or have Santa buy one for you) Bill's "Productivity Package". It's completely changed the way I work with Finale, and I've been a user for about 10 years. Besides all the fonts, Bill offers 50 of his personal templates and a wealth of professional tips and practical advice. Set aside the bread from your next gig to treat yourself to some of Bill's work; you won't regret it! End of commercial....
